Registered Nurse Job Description:


Performs comprehensive physical examinations, diagnostic tests, and psychological assessments, and obtains additional information from patients, consultants, and private physicians, in order to arrive at a diagnosis and plan of care.
Orders, analyzes and interprets laboratory tests, X-rays, EKG’s, MRI’s, CT’s, and prescribes, administers and modifies pharmacologic and psychopharmacologic medications and treatments according to established protocols and within the scope of practice.
Identify, isolate, and treat patients with reportable diseases and notifies proper public health care agencies.
Perform a variety of medical procedures, to include: drawing blood; pulse oximetry; read and interpret common EKG patterns, I&D abscesses/boils; starting IV’s; administering injections; manage minor wounds, simple single layer suturing in non-cosmetic areas, interpret meaning and results of ancillary studies within the scope of practice.
Compile, prepare and present medical case histories and clinical summaries for review by medical staff, specialists, and other clinicians and participates in conferences for the discussion of the diagnosis, behavior and treatment of patients.
Coordinate emergent and non-emergent transfer of patients to acute hospital, discharge of patients, and aftercare with treatment teams, outside healthcare agencies, and caregivers.
Participate with the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of health services to inmates with the Health Services Administrator/Psychiatrist/Dentist.
Participate in formal training of Jail staff in health care-related matters.
Develop and maintain a good working relationship with the healthcare team, to include correctional institution personnel.
Identify, communicate and document system-wide quality and cost containment measures
Assess patient’s medical and psychosocial needs to develop, communicate and implement a comprehensive plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.


Order specific diagnostic tests and/or consultations (with MD assistance as necessary).
Document outcome of treatment process for all abnormal studies to include: xray, laboratory.
Consultant for pharmaceutical management – allergies/drug reactions.
Responsible for infection control program.
Participate in Medical Director/Team conference calls


Master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized college, institute or university with major study in nursing, and graduation from an advanced practice registered nurse program that meets qualifications established by the Board of Nursing Examiners for the specialty in which the Nurse Practitioner is to be employed.


Five years' professional nursing experience in the field appropriate to the position for which recruitment is conducted.

Prior correctional clinical experience, preferred.


Skilled in conflict management to assure problem prevention and resolution.

Skilled in developing and maintaining positive relationships and communicating effectively with internal staff and external customers.

Skilled in analyzing and interpreting data, policy and procedure and communication of policy and procedure with clinical staff.


Able to perform basic to intermediate level of competence with various computer software applications including MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.

Able to effectively communicate with internal staff, jail administration and external customers.

Able to solve resource issues in a creative, positive manner to improve clinical outcomes of patients.

Able to work with correctional institution PCP and health care team members to most effectively manage patients.

Able to participate in program development and identify appropriate goals of program.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Requires sitting and standing associated with a busy office and hospital environment as well as stooping and bending to file and maintain orderliness; mobility to complete errands. Must be able to assess, evaluate, and respond to acute issues in a timely, competent manner. Must be able to function with frequent interruptions, accept change and able to prioritize activities when faced with competing demands.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal busy office environment and normal hospital environment.

Minimum Requirements:
-MSN or Advanced Certification
-Maine State License
-Certification by ANCC or AANP
-Current DEA Certification
• Minimum 12 months experience
• BCLS and ACLS required.
• Successful completion of Maxim Staffing Testing process.
• Successful completion of background screening and hiring process.
• Current physical exam, if required by state regulations or contract specifications.

Physical/Work Environment Requirements:
• Hospital, clinic, medical center, physician's office or other related health care facility.
• Exposure to blood borne pathogens and other bodily fluids
