Job Description

Nursing Assistant

Akahi Associates, LLC is seeking a highly qualified Nursing Assistant to work at our client site the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, MD. This is a full-time position with benefits. 40 hours per week, M-F.

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:

  • Perform phlebotomy and other procedures after completion of certification and/or training and competency validation completed.
  • Collect specimens from study participants (including but not limited to blood draws of HIV Infected Blood and urine specimens) for management and transportation preparation per coordinating protocol; generate numeric tracking labels for samples prior to submitting samples.
  • Ensure that sample volumes collected are within protocol rules and NIH policies.
  • Oversee Phlebotomy Lab and ensure that GCP and NIH CC guidelines are followed.
  • Prepare subject sample collection tubes daily/weekly per protocols for all visits.
  • Process specimens collected from study participants and distribute to appropriate lab for processing.
  • Ensure that sample information is accurate prior to releasing samples to be transported to the couriers, clinicians or scientists.
  • Coordinate with investigators on when to retrieve samples for experiments.
  • Ensure that all samples are properly transported without compromising the experiment.
  • Create and review sample submission forms for accuracy prior to database entry.
  • Maintain Chain of Custody Sheets.
  • Maintain Sample Submission Forms.
  • Coordinate the retrieval of samples from the laboratory storage facility upon investigators' request.
  • Correct and log discrepancies/clarification pertaining to sample collections and impart changes to policies to prevent future errors.
  • Observe and ensure the safety of human subjects while procedures are being performed.
  • Assist in the conduct follow up visits and review follow up forms with volunteer.
  • Obtain and document vital signs; temperature, blood pressure, height/weight, and report any abnormal findings to the clinical nurse.
  • Perform and document pregnancy tests on volunteers prior to vaccination as per protocols and clinician instruction.
  • Perform quality control test and maintain log on products used for procedures.
  • Assist research participants or other health care team members with prescribed interventions as directed by the Clinical Research Nurse.
  • Organize research information for clinical projects as per investigator request.
  • Monitor stock to ensure it is being utilized within the proper time limitations.
  • Replenish medical supplies for phlebotomy area and exam room and ensure expired supplies are disposed of properly.
  • Promptly identify, remove, report and dispose of outdated and/or contaminated supplies to NIH, to JCHCO and Environmental Audits.
  • Manage the follow-up to stipulation requests to ensure Good Clinical practices (GCP) & Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) according to Federal regulations; reinforce research participant’s instructions in the proper technique of various self-administered treatments and documents the activities performed.
  • Perform data entry in electronic databases.
  • Utilize automated equipment and devices safely.
  • Reinforce policies and procedures to research participants in conjunction with the clinical nurse teaching.
  • Participate in Protocol Training Sessions.
  • Perform reminder phone calls to study volunteers.
  • Perform clerical duties (answer phone, copy medical records, file medical records) as assigned to meet the needs of the research participants.
  • Perform telephone reminder calls to clinic volunteers.
  • Perform apheresis scheduling.
  • Provide one in-service per year.
  • Participate in clinic meetings.
  • Check and respond to emails in a timely manner.
  • Give insights and recommendations to improve clinic performance.

DELIVERABLES. Upon request, the contractor shall provide documentation evidence of any and/or all work product, including, but not limited to, the following tasks:

  • Work products and documents related to performing phlebotomy and other procedures; collect specimens from study participants; generate numeric tracking labels for samples prior to submitting samples; ensure that sample volumes collected are within protocol rules and NIH policies; oversee Phlebotomy Lab and ensure GCP and NIH CC guidelines are followed.
  • Work products and documents related to preparing subject sample collection tubes daily/weekly per protocols for all visits; process specimens collected from study participants and distributes to appropriate lab for processing; ensure that sample information is accurate.
  • Work products and documents related to maintaining Chain of Custody Sheets. Maintains Sample Submission Forms; coordinate the retrieval of samples from the laboratory storage facility; perform quality control test and maintain log on products used for procedures; assist research participants or other health care team members with prescribed interventions as directed by the Clinical Research Nurse; organize research information for clinical projects as per investigator request; monitor stock to ensure it is being utilized within the proper time limitations; replenish medical supplies for phlebotomy area and exam room.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSE, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR OTHER EXPERTISE REQUIRED. The contractor must have:

  • High school diploma. Certification required.
  • Minimum of thirteen (13) years of experience in a related field.
  • Computer skills to include MS Office Ability to provide quality, error free work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent phlebotomy skills.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Effective verbal communication
  • Detailed oriented with excellent planning/organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to embrace change and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time; requires long hours of eye and hand coordination.
  • Ability to lift light to moderately heavy objects. The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with dominant hand frequently to constantly throughout the day.
