The Residential Treatment Assistant is responsible for overseeing day-to-day activities in the housing units in the secure treatment facility. They are the first line of contact and provide overall care and safety of residents, including the monitoring of behavior, mental status and progress. They are responsible for ensuring residents are following the rules and regulations set forth by the program and addressing any issues that arise. They may also assist with resident transports to medical appointments or court hearings.

Education:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent required

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Studies in healthcare, mental health or human services a plus

Experience:

  • Direct care experience in a mental health or forensic mental facility, security residence or correctional facility preferred.

  • Healthcare, mental health or human services experience a plus.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Healthcare, mental health or human services license or certification a plus.
  1. Responsible for maintaining the overall safety of the living units and day rooms in collaboration with security department staff through the use of continual observation of residents’ behavior.
  2. Takes action to de-escalate or halt adverse resident behavior up to and including verbal and physical de-escalation techniques if necessary.
  3. Documents behavior and daily activities in appropriate logs, reports or resident records as necessary.
  4. Attends resident Integrated Care Plan meetings as assigned and works with the clinical team to report and assess resident treatment progress and plan future treatment goals.
  5. Monitors resident behavior to ensure compliance and reports evidence of violations via the facility incident reporting system.
  6. Conducts routine resident safety checks and conducts accurate living unit counts at assigned times, in conjunction with security department staff and monitors resident movement on and off of the living unit using appropriate documentation logs.
  7. May conduct 1:1 supervision of residents who are in crisis, and responsible for required documentation using the Patient Activity Monitoring and Management System.
  8. Participates in Residential Therapeutic Community Meetings.
  9. Assists Clinical Staff with therapeutic study hour on the residential housing units.
  10. Must apply critical thinking and sound judgment in compliance with facility policies and best practice in offender treatment, safety and security.
  11. Demonstrates patience and empathy.
  12. Demonstrates effective communication skills.
  13. Must be highly dependable.
  14. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or consistent basis.
  15. Must be able to maintain personal and professional boundaries.
  16. Must be alert at all times and be able to pay close attention to detail.
  17. Must be willing to work in a secure institution and be able to adhere to the rules and regulations of working in a secure facility.
  18. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and conduct supervision of residents by walking.
  19. Must be able to regularly climb stairs.
  20. Must be willing to work periodic overtime when needed.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.
