Overview

Our Addiction Specialist will provide comprehensive substance use services including assessments, treatment, and support for recovery to dually diagnosed individuals. The Addictions Counselor will track program participation for dissemination to appropriate administrative and supervisory staff. Substance use services will be integrated and consistent with ongoing mental health treatment, including the involvement of multi-disciplinary clinicians and sharing of information.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in clinical/counseling psychology, mental health counseling, social work, or a minimum of 4 years work-related experience in clinical/counseling psychology, mental health counseling or social work.

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of experience in a psychiatric hospital or correctional setting is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor is required or LICSW or LMHC licensure is acceptable in lieu of the Substance Abuse Counselor certification.

Responsibilities

  1. Assesses individuals with substance use disorders to determine their stage of change.
  2. Develops and provides alcohol and other drug education programs.
  3. Provides counseling services, including individual and group counseling.
  4. Collaborates with staff who provide medical and detoxification services and follow-up.
  5. Provides treatment of mental illness and substance use disorders with a focus on understanding how they interact with each other.
  6. Addresses psychosocial problems and skill deficiencies with individualized programming, created through comprehensive assessment and consultation with the patient.
  7. Contributes to discharge planning, treatment continuity and aftercare plans, which are integrated with the patient’s master treatment plan.
  8. Provides training and consultation to other staff on substance use disorders.
  9. Prepares quarterly Substance Use Disorder reports.
  10. Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats each patient as an individual, and considers the culture of the patients when providing care and treatment
  11. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  12. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  13. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  14. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.
