Our Recreation Specialist provides therapeutic recreation activities to all residents of the SVP Program. As a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, provides input to the team on residents' participation in therapeutic recreation activities.

Education for Recreation Specialist:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree in recreational therapy, recreation administration, or a related field highly desirable.

Experience for Recreation Specialist:

  • Demonstrated experience as a recreational provider required. Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreational and therapeutic activity programs.

Licenses/Certifications for Recreation Specialist:

  • None required.
  1. Plans and conducts daily recreation and recovery groups, manages group process/dynamics so as to maximize patient participation and positive objective outcomes. Implements individualized activity plans and mentoring. Maintains creative, stimulating groups and room environment.
  2. Assesses and reassesses patient's strengths and needs, and achievement of goals and objectives on the treatment plan.
  3. Completes therapeutic activity assessments and supervises other staff that completes therapeutic activity assessment and services.
  4. Performs timely, complete, accurate, and legible documentation of services provided that is consistent with professional standards, facility procedures, and department requirements.
  5. Is knowledgeable about care and treatment needs of patients of different ages. Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with sensitivity to the age and life span developmental needs of each patient.
  6. Is honest, consistent, fair, positive, and nurturing in daily interactions. Demonstrates values and philosophy of Role Recovery approach. Demonstrates advocacy for patients. Handles crisis behavior by identifying antecedents, verbal de-escalation and CPI implementation. Effective therapeutic communication - verbal, para-verbal, non-verbal.
  7. Takes initiative to make cooperative efforts with colleagues and other facility staff to meet the needs of patients.
  8. Manages time effectively including completion of assigned auxiliary support services and department task assignments.
  9. Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats patients as an individual, and considers the culture of the patients when providing care and treatment.
  10. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  11. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  12. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  13. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.
