Our Competency Intervention Specialist independently assesses patients from a clinical and psychosocial perspective; provides group and family therapeutic interventions; makes professional judgments of clinical and psychosocial needs; functions independently to coordinate all aspects of discharges; keeps current with developments in clinical approaches, negotiates effective communication between the treatment team and families, guardians and community providers.

Education:

  • A Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or related field is required.

Experience:

  • Must have knowledge of the DSM-IV / Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and community resources.
  • Two (2) years of experience with the severe and persistent mentally illis preferred
  • Ability to implement intervention strategies based upon analysis of information from verbal, non-verbal, collateral and narrative resources.
  • Experience in ethical decision-making and utilizing "strengths based” clinical practices with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to engage, maintain and appropriately terminate helping relationships with diverse client groups.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • High degree of empathetic listening, tact and kindness toward others.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licensed Mental Health Counselor or Licensed Social Worker preferred.
  1. Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with age and life span developmental needs of each patient.
  2. Develops biopsychosocial summaries, develops and implements interventions for barriers to discharge, coordinates all discharge planning and documentation.
  3. Advocates and negotiates with internal and external statewide systems on behalf of patients consistent with professional conduct and standards.
  4. Independently provides all care activities and appropriately seeks direction for unusual situations.
  5. Independently provides crisis intervention and assists families in understanding the complexities of mental illness.
  6. Utilizes all patient contact as opportunities for empowering therapeutic interventions. Consistently attends and represents clinical needs of patients during community meetings and treatment team meetings.
  7. Conducts professional assessment of family needs and provides family therapy as clinically determined.
  8. Provides counseling and facilitates therapeutic groups in accordance with patient’s recovery plan objectives and needs.
  9. Develops Discharge Plans in an accurate and thorough manner.
  10. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  11. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  12. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  13. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.
