Overview

Location: Travis AFB - David Grant Medical Center

Schedule: Monday - Friday from 0730 - 1630

Specific Department: Sports Medicine - Family Practice Residency

Duties
  • Knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of moderate difficulty and experience in assessing adult and geriatric patients, as appropriate. Utilizes the nursing process as a basis for professional practice.
  • Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the MTF
  • Prepare Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. In-house / in-person training will be provided. Part of this procedure includes phlebotomy of the patient and therefore this skill is critical.
  • Prepares patients for and administers medications and monitors them afterwards for signs of complication or reaction; administers CPR and other resuscitative measures as needed.
  • Ensures proper computer entry of patient data and equipment settings. Serves as an assistant during procedures: handling instruments, redirecting lighting, repositioning patients. Prepares all specimens for laboratory processing, places identification on all specimens, enters physician ordered laboratory test requests into computer, and delivers to Pathology department.
  • Assists with the orientation and training of newly hired personnel and incoming physicians starting the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.
  • Assists with procedures within the scope of practice to include assisting physicians with PRP, prolotherapy, compartment pressure testing, ultrasound guided injections, gait analysis, nerve hydro-dissection, visco-supplementation injections and steroid injections. Training will be provided.
  • Schedules patients for follow up appointments and for procedure appointments. Provides patient specific pre-procedure instructions and participates in postprocedure teaching and discharge instructions. Provides post-procedure telephone triage (during business hours) and provides instructions based upon nursing interventions and as guided by supervising physician.
  • Demonstrates and teaches patients prescribed exercise regimens and stretching exercises. Assists patients with obtaining/fitting for prescribed orthotics/braces/splints stocked in the Sports Medicine Clinic. Educates patient and family on proper application and use of braces and splints.
  • Becomes proficient in the setup of all equipment in the Sports Medicine Clinic used for procedures and treatments and assists the physician with those procedures. These machines include: various models and manufactures of diagnostic ultrasound machines (GE and Sonosite), PRP machines (Emcyte), Stryker compartment pressure test device, use of the treadmill for compartment pressure testing and the gait analysis program. Receives training and becomes proficient in preparing rooms for procedures.
  • Assists physicians with research projects - maintains CITI Training (Human Research Basic Course), participates in the research projects by screening patients and assists with the procedure.
  • Interacts with patients via telephone/T-Cons and/or in person for health-related questions.
  • Directs the work of others to include the following: active duty military enlisted personnel, Licensed Practical Nurses, medical/nursing assistants, paraprofessional
    students and volunteers.
  • Must assess, identify, report, and document changes in objective and subjective signs and symptoms. Measures and records vital signs which include height, weight, pain assessment, and provide written and verbal reports regarding patient care for inclusion in the patient's medical record.
  • Assists with obtaining general medical information, including allergies and drug sensitivities. Prepares patients for tests, examinations, and treatment; assists patients as needed and provides comfort and safety. Instructs patients’ regarding preparation for procedures, post-procedure expectations, and signs/symptoms of potential complications. Regulates patient flow, and directs/moves patients to and from X-ray, MRI, cast room/brace shop, pharmacy and Physical Therapy.
  • In collaboration with the physicians and the rest or the healthcare team, instructs patients in sound health practices, taking into account illness, physical limitations, and culture and socioeconomic status, and teaches patients warning signs for early detection of diseases.
  • Prepares and conducts in-service training annually to clinic personnel. Assists with competency-based assessment training and evaluation of new personnel. Participates in the Sports Medicine Performance Improvement projects.
  • Performs a variety of auxiliary duties connected with patient care, such as checking operational status of emergency and clinic equipment; ensuring sterile/aseptic condition of examination and treatment instruments, and devices, and maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly work environment by applying knowledge of infection control measures and aseptic techniques. Reports unusual occurrences and unsafe or potentially harmful patient care or employee work conditions to supervisor and to the Patient Safety Representative, when appropriate.
  • Maintains adequate supplies in patient care areas, labels specimens, completes written and electronic laboratory request, monitors stock levels and expiration dates of available medications and supplies, and replenishes when required. Able to set up equipment for supplemental oxygen and suction, and administer to patient. Obtains patient medical records, X-Ray/MRI reports and laboratory reports from within the network and from outside the network providers.
  • Ability to proficiently navigate through clinical and office automated systems including several types of software to meet various clinical and office requirements. These include but are not limited to the electronic medical record (MHS Genesis), and Microsoft office (MS Word, Xcel, OneNote) as well as ASIMS.
  • Ability to operate a keyboard is required. Assists in maintaining and monitoring patient appointment schedules for the clinic. Schedules appropriate patient appointments. Maintains patient confidentially. Keeps a running log of procedures done on each patient in a password protected excel spreadsheet for the fellows.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Degree: Bachelors of Science in Nursing.
Education: Graduate from an accredited professional nursing educational program.
Certifications: Have and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS)
Experience:

  • Have at least 12 months of nursing experience including phlebotomy
    experience.
  • Ability to type 40 wpm with no more than 5 errors.
  • Computer literacy with proficiency documenting and retrieving medical patient information across multiple database platforms.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.

Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse
as required in the TO.
