Our Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for using the Nursing Process to plan, implement and evaluate the provision of comprehensive psychiatric and general nursing care within the scope of their practice, and under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Makes and receives assignments, sets priorities, and participates in program services as assigned.

Education for Licensed Practical Nurse:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing or vocational school.

Experience for Licensed Practical Nurse:

  • One (1) year of experience in a secure, psychiatric or acute care setting is preferred.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

Licenses/Certifications for Licensed Practical Nurse:

  • Current applicable State of South Carolina license to practice professional nursing and

    maintain a current copy on file with the hospital at all times; or eligible for registration

    through the Multistate Recognition - Nurse Licensure Compact.
  1. Assists in providing comprehensive nursing care services including; treatment, recovery plan development, implementation of the plan of care and evaluation of the effectiveness of nursing intervention.
  2. Administers medications and demonstrates thorough understanding of all requirements and practice standards relating to the administration of medications, including compliance with SVP policy and procedures, documentation requirements; medication management education.
  3. Develops therapeutic relationships and demonstrates thorough knowledge and therapeutic intervention skills based on knowledge of mental health disorders; human growth and development, principles of psychiatric rehabilitation (role recovery philosophy), patients’ language within scope of practice.
  4. Applies nursing services procedures and demonstrates thorough knowledge of all applicable nursing services and related policy and procedures. Proper utilization of medical equipment, including glucometers.
  5. Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats patients as individuals, and considers the culture of the patients when providing care and treatment.
  6. Is knowledgeable about care and treatment needs of patients of different ages. Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with/sensitive to the age and life span developmental needs of each patient.
  7. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  8. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  9. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  10. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.
