Nurse Practitioners

Akahi Associates, LLC is seeking a highly qualified Nurse Practitioner to work at our client site the National Institute of Health and Clinical Center Critical Care Medicine Department (CC), Bethesda, MD

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:

  • Serve as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team and will work with a variety of other members from the team including but not limited to: research physicians and scientists, therapists, social workers, pharmacists, nutritionists, technicians, clinical research nurses, nurse specialists and a variety of support and ancillary staff.
  • Serve as an authority for a specified patient population, independently assessing acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities, and appropriately consulting medical staff colleagues from the specific institute or program.
  • Expertly perform and document physical assessments and patient histories.
  • Predict and analyze trends in patient conditions and develops a patient management plan in response to the data obtained.
  • Document same through in-depth progress notes and dictation summaries
  • Communicate and collaborate with the multidisciplinary research team to develop patient management strategies that are successful in meeting complex, subtle and challenging patient care and research needs.
  • Serve as a patient advocate along with other health care professionals.
  • Collaborate with the patient, family and significant others in developing plans that consider and respect the patient's cultural background, level of understanding, and available resources and support systems.
  • Perform the following invasive procedures and guides the practice and assesses the competence of less experienced clinicians: these include, but are not limited to, lumbar puncture, bone marrow biopsy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, fine needle aspirate, Ommaya reservoir access, central line removal, arterial blood gas, suturing, skin punch biopsy, cytotoxic administration. Evaluates and interprets findings.
  • Lead patient care rounds and conferences.
  • Present patient cases and topics for patient care conferences for the express purpose of improving patient and research processes and outcomes.
  • Provide appropriate patient and family counseling and education with consideration of the patients learning needs, learning readiness and impediments to the process.
  • Order patient admissions, transfers and discharges.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies.
  • Order appropriate medication and treatments.
  • Refer patients for consultation as indicated, i.e. dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, infectious disease, social service, nutrition, etc.
  • Provide specialty consultative services to colleagues in nursing, medicine and other disciplines and is recognized outside the CC for a particular area of expertise.
  • Benchmark standards of care in the community.
  • Design, implement and evaluate complex protocols and manages challenging patient or protocol populations.

DELIVERABLES. Upon request, the contractor shall provide documentation evidence of any and/or all work product, including, but not limited to, the following tasks:
  • Work products and documents relate to serving as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team and will work with a variety of other members from the team; communicating and collaborating with the multidisciplinary research team to develop patient management strategies.
  • Work products and documents relate to serving as an authority for a specified patient population, independently assessing acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities, and appropriately consulting medical staff colleagues; serving as a patient advocate along with other health care professionals.
  • Work products and documents relate to predicting and analyze trends in patient conditions and develops a patient management plan in response to the data obtained;
  • Work products and documents relate to performing invasive procedures and guides the practice and assesses the competence of less experienced clinicians; designing, implementing and evaluating complex protocols and manages challenging patient or protocol populations.
  • Work products and documents relate to presenting patient cases and topics for patient care conferences for the express purpose of improving patient and research processes and outcomes; referring patients for consultation as indicated; benchmarking standards of care in the community.
  • Work products and documents relate to leading patient care rounds and conferences; ordering patient admissions, transfers and discharges; ordering and interpret appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSE, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR OTHER EXPERTISE REQUIRED. The contractor must have:
  • Master’s degree in Nursing. Requires a nurse practitioner license and ANCC certification. Requires a written agreement with a physician.
  • Minimum of nine (9 years of experience in the healthcare professional education field.
  • Certified and licensed Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Certified and licensed Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
  • Certified in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • Licensed in State of Maryland.
  • Possess the ability to be credentialed by both the Nursing Department and Medical Board of NIH.
