Job Description

Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant opening in southern Montana! This position will be working about 16 hrs per week with the potential to pick up more hours.

PA/NP – Women's Correctional Facility

The part time position will provide primary care including mental health care to incarcerated persons within the Detention Center. Ensure continual access to healthcare for incarcerated persons. Oversee the delivery of medical care and ensure meeting the identified needs of the incarcerated population. Follow the guidelines of the Department of Corrections and the Detention Center.


Duties and Responsibilities:

-Provide primary care for offenders including obtaining a complete medical history and physical exam
-Interpret and integrate data to determine appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as needed
-Collaborate with nursing staff in managing acute and long term medical needs of incarcerated men and women
-Order appropriate lab and diagnostic procedures
-Synthesize data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan utilizing principles of prevention
-Prescribe medications
-Interview and advise inmates regarding health and illness prevention
-Utilize community resources to teach, provide follow up care as appropriate, and provide other support services
-Instruct inmates regarding medication use and treatment of illness
-Maintain and review inmate medical records, charts and other pertinent data
-Communicate clearly and effectively with nursing personnel as to the course of treatment
-Manage medical emergencies
-Provide monitoring
-Document activities with incarcerated populations clearly, thoroughly and include time
-Be available for consultation, for nursing, mental health and facility staff
-Limited medical supervision of nursing staff; sign off charts
-Work closely with mental health providers, Department of Correction staff, Detention Center staff and management, and PPMT staff.
-Assist in the evaluation of staff and recommend disciplinary action when appropriate
-Assist in hiring and oversee orientation of new staff members
-Attend all required meetings and participate in committees as requested
-Follow all Department of Corrections rules, regulations and policies and ensure that medical staff is meeting the same standards

Professional Requirements
Maintain licensure
Participate in professional development activities and maintain professional affiliations
Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time
Maintains confidentiality at all times
Complies with all health and safety guidelines
Attends department staff meetings as required
Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI)activities
Coordinates efforts in meeting regulatory compliance, federal, state and local regulations and
standards
Completes annual educational/licensure requirements

Education
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or successful completion of an approved Physician Assistant program.
Currently licensed to practice in state of Montana
Administrative experience preferred
Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice and medical care to give and evaluate patient care
Knowledge of organization policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care
Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
