Job Description

Responsible and accountable for high quality patient care through implementation of the nursing process including assessment of patient needs (physical, psychosocial, educational), design of a collaborative plan of care, implementation of the plan with appropriate delegation of tasks, coordination of team effort, and evaluation of patient progress towards outcomes

Monitors patient throughout (before/during/after) the labor

Monitors contractions and helps patient with breathing techniques

Performs basic IV and central line skills

Performs phlebotomy skills

Administers pain medication as ordered; administers other meds to address specific medical conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes

Reads fetal monitor & ascertains if there is a problem with baby’s heart rate

Takes and records patient’s vital signs, ascertains if problematic

Checks patient’s cervix periodically to monitor progression/lack of dilation

Contacts anesthesia when/if patient is ready for epidural; contacts delivering physician at appropriate time, ascertains proper time

Cares for patients on Pitocin, MgSO4 & continuous lumbar epidural

Ensures patient is in proper position for delivery & all monitoring equipment is functioning properly

Aids doctor with drapes, gloves, gowns, etc.; hands doctor delivery instruments as needed during birthing process

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Job Info

Minimum of 1-2 years experience as a clinical nurse RN

Associates degree in nursing (ADN) required, bachelor's degree preferred

3 or more years of current experience as a Labor and Delivery nurse is preferred

Current RN licensure or compact licensure recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing

BCLS certification through the AHA

ACLS certification through the AHA

NRP and IFM required

Travel experience a plus

Demonstrate the highest level of professionalism when interacting with patients, families, physicians, and hospital staff members.
