FLSA status: Non-Exempt

Salary Grade: H - $59,000 - $77,000


Job Summary


The Health Educator (Maternity Health) is responsible for engaging CalOptima's pregnant and postpartum members through implementation of perinatal health education activities. This role provides individual and group health education services and acts as a resource for CalOptima providers, health networks, and community partners. The incumbent will deliver health education interventions to improve pregnancy outcomes through various methods and techniques that are effective to CalOptima members. Flexible schedule requires availability to participate in evening and weekend events when scheduled.


Position Responsibilities:


• Conducts telephonic assessments with eligible members to including discussions on nutrition, health education, psychosocial issues, community resources, and referrals.

• Provides health education coaching using a member-centric approach.

• Provides parent education including breastfeeding promotion, child development, safety, preventive care, health screenings, pregnancy induction, and chronic condition management with the CalOptima perinatal population.

• Develops and conducts assessments to evaluate member health needs.

• Prepares written materials for distribution to members in the appropriate formats and literacy levels as needed.

• Coordinates health education program activities with other departments, outside agencies, and organizations.

• Stays current on developments and standards in the field of maternal health education.

• Follows CalOptima's protocol for documenting all interventions.

• Completes productivity reports as required.

• Serves as a resource for CalOptima providers, health networks, and the community.

• Other projects and duties as assigned.


Possesses the Ability To:


• Effectively communicate with perinatal members using an empathetic member-centric approach.

• Organize a large case load with multiple member outreach points throughout the pregnancy and the postpartum period.

• Review, develop, and recommend high quality, culturally appropriate health education materials.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels, providers, other programs. or agency representatives, and the public.

• Provide excellent customer service.

• Initiate and follow through on projects with minimal supervision.

• Work well as part of a team to manage/lead multiple cases and/or projects simultaneously.

• Think critically to solve problems effectively.

• Communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

• Utilize computer and appropriate software (e.g., Microsoft Office: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and job specific applications/systems to produce correspondence, charts, spreadsheets, and/or other information applicable to the position assignment.


Experience & Education:


• Bachelor's degree in Health Education, Public Health, Women's Health, or other related field required.

• Valid driver's license and vehicle, or other approved means of transportation, an acceptable driving record, and current auto insurance will be required for work away from the primary office approximately 10% of the time to events in the community.


Preferred Qualifications:


• Master's degree in Health Education, Public Health, Women's Health, or another related field preferred.

• Certified Lactation Educator (CLE) certification preferred.

• 1 year of health education experience, preferably in a managed care setting preferred.

• 1 year of experience in maternal and newborn services preferred.


Knowledge of:


• Health education program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

• Fetal and infant development and prenatal health standards

• Perinatal mood, anxiety disorders, and substance use during pregnancy

• Local resources to refer members to community-based support.

• Behavior change, adult learning, and group process theories and application.

• Motivational interviewing/client-centered counseling.

• Health literacy and plain language communication.

• Appropriate techniques, practices, and cultural sensitivities to serve social and ethnic groups.
