Job Description

Description/Purpose of Position

Provides safe, competent nursing care for patients in accordance with facility policies, standards, and philosophy. Provides professional leadership and support to the healthcare team. The concepts of Patient Centered Care will provide the foundation for all nursing care. Oversees and guides employees that are under his/her supervision. Demonstrates Service Excellence standards at all times.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing and completion of a Specialty course or equivalent. BSN preferred.

Experience: One year acute care experience or successful completion of an approved specialty course. Technical Skill

License/Certification: Current RN license in the State of Nevada. Current BLS Certification. Current ACLS Certification (adult patients), current PALS Certification (pediatric patients) or current NRP Certification (Neonatal patients). Other certification as may be required by facility, speciality or department.

Other: Must successfully pass any pre-employment assessment(s) required by the facility.

Note: An RN graduate is a nurse who has completed a course of study at a school of nursing and is eligible for the NCLEX. The RN graduate performs directly under the supervision of the Charge Nurse or RN designee. An interim RN license must be granted by the Nevada State Board of Nursing.

Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure Category

Category I: Job usually involves contact with patients or patient specimens. Exposure to blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens, is possible.

Constructs and implements the plan of care using nursing knowledge and skill. Integrates direct and indirect patient care activities related to the diagnosis and co-morbidities.

Coordinates the implementation of the interdisciplinary plan of care for assigned patients. Develops goals, treatment plans, and discharge plans that meet individual patient/family needs.

Consistently completes hourly rounds with purpose to strengthen nurse communication, improve safety, and anticipate

patient needs (i.e. pain, re-positioning, toileting). Rounds with purpose including pro-actively evaluating the environment to ensure it is

Actively participates in bedside report (as appropriate) to ease anxiety and address important points of care, concerns, and progress with the patient/family.

Acts with integrity, consistency, and respect for differing views.

Assumes role of team member, charge nurse or team leader based on the need and/or situation.

Follows communication practices that minimize risks associated with handoffs among providers, and across transitions in care utilizing the SBAR process.

Utilizes clinical reasoning and knowledge based on evidence-based practice outcomes and research studies as the basis for decision making and comprehensive patient care.

Demonstrates quality through accurate documentation of the nursing process in a responsible, accountable manner.

Utilizes the results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice and care delivery.

Participates in efforts to minimize cost and eliminate waste and unnecessary duplication.

Follows facility policies and procedures to promote patient safety (i.e. safe medication administration, equipment safety practices, radiation safety, fire prevention, etc).

Reports errors (facility and unit) to promote analysis of errors and design of prevention or system improvements.

Ensures the confidentiality and security of patient information while advocating for and involving the patient as appropriate.

Maximizes the capabilities of the electronic clinical information system to enhance clinical decision and care planning.

Makes discretionary patient care decisions/interventions independently within the scope of practice (selects a course of action consistent with the patient’s needs and is accountable for decisions). Is self-directed and decision oriented.

Adheres to guidelines for IV therapy/Blood Administration.

Emergency Care/Code Blue Management – Prepares patients for emergency treatment with thorough knowledge of all emergency practices. Coordinates emergency measures to sustain life.

Ensures resolution of all PYXIS discrepancies prior to shift end.

Ensures that data entered into Cerner systems accurately reflect unit census and discharges. Ensures that physician orders via Cerner are carried out in a timely manner.

Completes unit based Performance Improvement activities as assigned.

Prioritizes and delegates care appropriately.

Mechanical Ventilation Care/Management – Maintains artificial airway and prevents complications associated with their use. Assists the patient to breath without the aid of mechanical ventilator.

Competency in use of technology and computers as necessary for job responsibilities.

Two incompletes on any Core Measure results in an RI for this line item.

Oversees and implements diversity specific safety plans and implements accident prevention/safety measures.

Demonstrates effective communication skills appropriate to population diversity.

Demonstrates an awareness of and implements National Patient Safety Goals as applicable to area of practice.
