POSITION STANDARDS

EDUCATION:

  • Current BCLS certification required within upon hire.
  • Current ACLS certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Current PALS certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current license to practice in the state of New Hampshire.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year Medical/Surgical nursing experience or 6 months of emergency room or critical care nursing experience preferred.

PART TWO: FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Position Objective

The Emergency Services Staff Nurse provides direct nursing care to patients presenting to the Emergency Room with acute/primary care and emergent medical needs. The population served is pediatric to elderly adult. The staff nurse provides care using the nursing process; assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care needs. Establishing nursing practice based on current standards of ambulatory and emergency nursing care. The staff nurse must be able to recognize and establish priorities and set objectives and goals for work assignments and patient care delivery. Maintains competency in using medical equipment. Complies with hospital, nursing department and unit policies and procedures.

Performance Expectation

  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Follows the seven medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Performs patient care using an integrated approach that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Ability to formulate an individual plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment and evaluate overall plan for effectiveness.
  • Communicates clinical information appropriately to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs. Collaborates with all ancillary departments.
  • Coordinates and supervises patient care, as necessary.
  • Demonstrates an ability to organize and prioritize job function.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills, using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Performs physical/psychosocial assessment to collect data: follows the written plan of care, standards, practice guidelines.
  • Utilizes assessment data to identify patient care needs, to include patient education and discharge planning.
  • Recognizes and reports abnormal assessment data and incorporates findings into the plan of care: validates and revises expected outcomes based on assessment.
  • Accurately and legibly documents all patient care activities, including but not limited to, wound assessment, patient care teaching, demonstrated progress toward goals, medication administration, nursing flow sheets and all assessment forms.
  • Delegates tasks to the health care team members appropriately.
