(Archived) Certified Occupational Health Nurse

Job Description

The Occupational Health Nurse services will include emergency treatment, preemployment physical examinations, fitness-for-duty examinations, preventive health

screening examinations, occupational health surveillance examinations, minor wound-care, referrals, and the administration of immunization/allergy shots.

The NIST is a highly diversified national science laboratory that engages in a wide variety of physical/chemical science research programs and industrial activities that have the recognized potential to expose its employees, to occupational health/safety conditions more complex than is routinely found in many commercial and industrial type activities.

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)

  • Have an Associate's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Have a current Registered Nurse Licensed in the State of Maryland and valid for the duration of the contract.
  • Shall be certified as an Occupational Health Nurse (COHN). Or must obtain COHN certification within 180 days of employment.
  • Experience required to routinely perform venipuncture, EKG's, Pulmonary Function Tests, Audiometric Exams and Visual Acuity Exams.
  • Shall have and maintain for the duration of the contract valid certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and in Occupational Hearing Conservation (certified by the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC); shall have satisfactorily completed a training course in spirometry sponsored by an appropriate academic or professional institution. Or must obtain ACLS, and/or CAOHC certification (s) within 30 days of employment.
  • Have a minimum of one (1) full year of recent full-time employment experience as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse in an occupational setting having a full range of industrial/laboratory hazards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Shall have knowledge, skill and experience required to routinely perform venipuncture, EKG's, Pulmonary Function Tests, Audiometric Exams and Visual Acuity Exams.
  • Be able to clearly and effectively communicate with all patients and other healthcare providers.
  • Working knowledge of computers.
