JOB SUMMARY

The Pre-Op Registered Nurse works in collaboration with the anesthesia physician to assess the physical needs of the surgical patients and implement a plan of care. Orders, interprets, and reports clinical test results to the physician prior to surgery. Submits medication orders required, documents patient conditions, and provides patients with an overview on the form of anesthesia to be used and educates them on the upcoming procedures.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of two years nursing experience in critical care/ICU
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program, certification in critical care, and a Tennessee state RN license
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

  • Compiles scheduling information from computer, hardcopy schedules, and surgeons’ offices to obtain surgery dates, procedures, patient contact information, and appointment times.
  • Gathers previous medical records including cardiac and/or pulmonary testing and other anesthesia records, prepare copies for current surgical records, and forward to appropriate departments as necessary.
  • Obtains pre-admission medical histories and physical data on surgical patients through personal interviews via telephone or in-person to determine anesthesia delivery plan.
  • Evaluates and determines current health status noting medications prescribed and frequency of dosages.
  • Provides interpretations on medical status, records data collected, and provides reports to physicians.
  • Prepares copies and compiles anesthesia packets including company history, anesthesia orders, and consent forms as required.
  • Follows instructions provided by physicians in preparing the patients for surgery.
  • Completes anesthesia physicians’ orders for appropriate lab tests and medications required for specific procedures
  • Reviews and interprets lab test results and provides guidance on pre-admission treatments.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, regulations and practices to give and evaluate patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Knowledge of advanced concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of critical care and surgical pre-op nursing.
  • Knowledge of OSHA guidelines for collecting, disposing, and working with contaminated or possible infectious materials and specimens.
