Under direct supervision of the Health Services Administrator (HSA)/Program Manager (PM), or higher medical professional, the Psychiatric Registered Nurses will develop, initiate and coordinate the patient plan of care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in collaboration with the healthcare team and in compliance with all agency, local, state, federal laws and regulations.

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years’ working in a psychiatric nurse role
  • Previous correctional/detention facility experience
  • At least two years’ experience providing treatment to adults with various mental health disabilities

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current (and must maintain) unrestricted RN license in state of practice
  • Psychiatric–Mental Health Nursing Certification, i.e. via ANCC, or has completed required hours and is in process of testing for certification
  • Current (and must maintain) lifesaving BLS certification through AHA
  1. Utilizes the nursing process to provide quality and efficient patient care according to established standards including: accurately completing admission and other assessments, and collecting, analyzing, and prioritizing assessment data to facilitate proper patient care
    o Document nursing assessments using the S.O.A.P.E. format
    o Prepare and administer medication in accordance with physician orders as required/assigned
  2. Respond to psychiatric emergencies as identified
  3. Refer all 5150 eligible persons served to the County Mental Health and/or Emergency Room for evaluation
  4. Assess for Suicide Ideation and manage the appropriate risk level
  5. Hold daily sick call, evaluate patients, obtain medication history, verify current medication and consult with medical provider/psychiatrist to continue psychotropic medications, and discuss conditions falling outside protocol perimeters
  6. Communicate with health services staff regarding persons served mental health status
  7. Evaluate and refer persons served requiring psychotropic medications to psychiatrist for evaluation and monitoring.
  8. Triage and respond to mental health complaints from medical and custody staff as needed
  9. Chart all findings in persons served medical record
  10. Provide on-going crisis intervention and counseling
  11. Participate in Quality Management Peer Review activities and staff training
  12. Provide individual and/or group counseling as required
  13. Provide on-call services as needed
  14. Perform initial psychiatric assessment on patients admitted to outpatient housing unit, provide daily rounds and document in the medical record
  15. Coordinate the activities of his/her shift and responds to the intake area as requested and coordinates/communicates with detention staff as needed
  16. Maintain a clean, safe, and secure working environment
  17. Triage and communicate with physician, PA/NP, or Nursing supervisor any potentially significant medical and/or mental health complaints or observations discovered during routine duties
  18. Respond and initiate lifesaving measures to man-down calls, identify medical emergencies, and assist in the arranging for transportation to hospital
  19. May assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process of potential staff
  20. May assist for orientation and training of new employees
  21. Responsible for the performance evaluations and successful training of direct reports
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
