Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Team Lead- Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Lead Advanced Practice Provider for CT Surgery is responsible for providing all clinical care in addition to leadership, direction, education, and supervision of the Advanced Practice Providers within the CTS service. The APP team consists of 5 surgical APPs and 7 non-surgical APPs, and will expand according to the needs. This position reports to the Heart and Vascular Institute APP Manager with strong collaboration with the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
This APP role is responsible for providing both patient care and advanced practice provider (APP) team level leadership and operational support. Patient care will be performed in collaboration with service physicians and include - conducting examinations, managing patients medically with possible bedside procedure support and facilitating interventions for patients. APPs exercise delegated/supervisory autonomy in medical decision making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including responsibilities for clinical coordination, education, research, and administrative services. In addition to delivering service specific care, the APP Team Lead is responsible for the operations of the APP services within the clinical specialty. This includes management of coverage provided by the APP service, quality, ongoing evaluation, and program development for improved clinical outcomes. The APP Team Lead will work closely with the medical/surgical director, physicians, advanced practice leadership, and the service line.

Cardiovascular APP’s with surgical first assist training / certification will be expected to be skilled in endovascular vein and/or radial artery harvesting for cardiovascular surgical patients. Additionally, this APP provides care in the clinic setting and care coordination through “daily rounding” in the CTICU and cardiac floor for CV surgical and thoracic patients, using an organized, multidisciplinary team approach to provide continuity of care. Participating in rotating first assist call for evenings/nights and weekends is also an expectation. Our program has five cardiothoracic surgeons who perform over 30 heart transplants and 40 lung transplants per year. In addition to routine CT Surgery procedures, our surgeons perform cutting edge procedures such as robotic assisted CABG, minimally invasive valve surgeries and currently planning for robotic mitral valve surgeries.

* Conducts history/physical examinations, admission workups and consults including assessments and plans in collaboration with supervising physician.
* Responds to floor calls and evaluates patients as needed for post-procedure complications, change in medical condition or other patient/RN concerns.
* Daily rounding on hospital patients, monitoring therapy and providing continuity of care.
* Clinic coverage and operational support if applicable.
* Counsels’ patients/family on condition and pre-/post-surgical / procedural care.
* Documents patient information and care in the medical record including, but not limited to H&Ps, clinic/progress notes, consults, and discharge summaries.
* Provides leadership for the APP team including, but not limited to scheduling, service development and quality, and mitigating / optimizing interprofessional communication and collaboration.
* Provide on-going evaluation of current work practices, workflows, and service coverage as it pertains to APPs to continue to develop services that provide the highest quality of care in the most efficient manner possible.
* Monitor and optimize productivity and billing practices.
* Maintains specialty clinical support operations related to APP services. Monitors workflow processes maintaining efficient, systematic approaches to the daily tasks.
* Integral involvement in process improvement initiatives throughout the service –involving clinical workflows to create more efficient, effective, systematic approaches to patient care.
* Facilitates discharge planning and patient throughput.
* Works in conjunction with the educator to onboard new APPs.

Qualifications:
* Masters Degree (APRN or PA)
* Current PA/APRN National Certification and licensure in the State of Florida
* Minimum of three years’ experience as an APP in a relevant acute / primary care setting, including 1 year in specific service line/department supporting in role
* Surgical experience required; CT Surgery experience preferred
* Previous leadership / management experience preferred
