Job Description

Overview:

This position is for a Nurse (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner/Pediatric) GS-0610-11 located in the Department of Pediatrics.

Serves as Nurse Practitioner in the Pediatric and Well Baby Clinic with responsibility for planning and developing methods, practices and approaches for family and child health care.

Performs complete physical examinations of children and babies to assess development and/or health problems.

Plans and carries out appropriate treatments, initiating and modifying selected therapies. Prescribes and administers medications authorized by protocol or physicians. Orders laboratory tests and X-rays, and interprets results. As necessary, refers patients and parents to physicians or other hospital departments, or to social welfare agencies. Counsels and instructs parents in person and over telephone on childrens, health problems, nutritional needs, child rearing, development, discipline, immunizations, etc. Directs and instructs students and paraprofessionals assigned to the clinic. Performs telephone triage for pediatric patients after normal duty hours and on the weekend.
Responsibilities:

Must be a United States Citizen

Must possess a valid Nursing Licensed that has not elapsed/expired

Must have a Nurse Practitioner Certification

This position requires that the incumbent must successfully complete a pre-placement medical examination.

This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations in accordance with MEDCOM Operation Order 09-54.

This position is a drug testing designated position subject to pre-employment drug test and random drung testing in accordance with AR 600-85.

This position has a mandatory childcare background check requirement. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be required to pass a childcare background check.



Qualifications:

Knowledge of the full range of professional nursing principles and practices to perform advanced specialized assignments in pediatric health care.

Knowledge of the stages in child development and health care.

Skill to take medical histories, conduct physical examinations assess, minor childhood illnesses and develop treatment plans.

Skill to provide preventive care to healthy babies, including guidance to parents in nutrition, care of common illnesses, growth and development.

Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their desired effects, side effects and complications.
