Registered Nurse (RN) - Behavioral Care Job Overview:

  • As a member of the Behavioral Health team, provides mental health clinical case management, care coordination and disease management.
  • Includes but is not limited to depression, anxiety disorders, tobacco cessation, weight management, TBI and PTSD conditions.
  • Monitors and facilitates adherence to treatment, provides education, coordinates care, and maintains data registries, performs full scope of clinical nursing in the execution of outpatient mental health care.
  • Coordinates patient care through the continuum to achieve optimal health outcomes, quality and cost effectiveness. Assesses, coordinates, facilitates and delivers care for adult patients relevant to the practice environment and procedures performed. Provides patient and family education according to credentialed provider's instruction and documents patient and family understanding.
  • Establishes a nursing plan of care that effectively applies core disease management principles to mental health conditions and includes: a) assessment and identification of target populations; b) implementation and execution of Clinical Practice Guidelines or standards; c) collaboration and coordination of activities with other healthcare members; and d) promotion and education of patient self-management actions.
  • Orients, trains and mentors new personnel.
  • Evaluates and cares for patients utilizing the nursing process as a basis for professional practice. Assesses patient's compliance, barriers to compliance and develops a nursing plan of care accordingly.
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates with a diverse group for the purpose of informing and coordinating care with the healthcare team. Communications include patient care plans/actions and teaching/education to benefit the patient/family/ organization.
  • Completes accurate documentation, both handwritten and electronic, of all activity to include patient care hand-offs and care coordination in accordance with requirements.
  • Synthesizes data from multiple sources. Makes appropriate clinical decisions implementing nursing care theories and existing evidence-based practices to return the patient to pre-hospital and/or acute illness baseline prior to discharge to home or transferring to the next level of care.
  • Reacts quickly in emergency situations. Recognizes patients at risk for harm to self and/or others, or experiencing adverse signs and symptoms. Ability to calmly assess life-threating situations and appropriately coordinate/expedite life-saving intervention(s). Possesses competence in all required emergency procedures for the assigned patient population.

Registered Nurse (RN) - Behavioral Care Job Qualifications:

  • Graduate from nursing program accredited by NLNAC or CCNE
  • ADN. BSN preferred.
  • Board Certified/Eligible: Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse by ANCC with 2 years full time experience in mental health.
  • RN Licensure: active, valid, current, and unrestricted. Any US state.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
  • Computer competency (Microsoft Office, computer operations, medical records, et al)
  • Minimum of 3 years experience full-time as a RN
  • 2 years in the last 3 years as a mental/behavioral health or psychiatric nurse

  • Working knowledge of mental health levels of care to include post-hospital and acute care illness stabilization. Ability to anticipate and articulate to health management and/or interdisciplinary team members the patient's needs, requirements, abilities, and limitations.
  • Comprehensive understanding of professional nursing care standards, theories, principles, practices, disease processes and procedures to perform nursing assignments of moderate to severe difficulty for acute and chronically ill adult and geriatric patients as appropriate.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of mental health, human growth and development, and pathophysiology of disease processes, as they apply to the care environment for all ages of the spectrum from adult to geriatrics.
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacological agents used in patient treatment, knowledge of the desired effects, side effects and complications of their use, as well as the accurate administration of the psychopharmacologic agents. Must possess a working knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including the disease process, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.
  • Skill and tact in communicating with people who may be physically or mentally ill, uncooperative, fearful, emotionally distraught, and occasionally dangerous.
  • Must possess organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills to articulate medical requirements to patients, families/caregivers, medical and non-medical staff in a professional and courteous way
