Job Description
The WIC Certification Specialist provides essential services to applicants and clients of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). This position is responsible for scheduling appointments, determining program eligibility, conducting height, weight, and hemoglobin measurements, and issuing benefits to clients. The WIC Certification Specialist works in a busy clinic setting and collaborates with internal and external healthcare and social service providers.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Schedule appointments for clients, considering their schedule and preferences.
- Determine clients' eligibility, including income and residency, following established policies and procedures.
- Accurately document client demographics, income, residency, voter registration, immunizations, and other interactions in STARS (WIC database).
- Offer assistance to applicants/clients with voter registration.
- Review immunization records and refer clients to healthcare providers as needed.
- Perform height, weight, and hemoglobin measurements when necessary, and record the information accurately.
- Issue benefits to eligible clients.
- Explain the WIC Program, clients' rights and responsibilities, how to use program benefits, authorized vendors, and allowable WIC foods.
- Promote breastfeeding as the norm for infant feeding.
Qualifications/Experience/Requirements:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a health-related field preferred, or high school diploma.
- Successful completion of the ITCA competency-based training program within 60 days of hire and an approved breastfeeding course within 6 months of hire.
- Valid and unrestricted Arizona driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Class I Fingerprint Clearance Card obtained within the initial ninety (90) calendar days of employment.
- Substance abuse testing upon employment and random testing during employment.
- Updated Immunization (IZ) Record and current Tuberculosis (TB) skin test upon employment.
- CPR Card obtained within ninety (90) calendar days of employment and maintained throughout employment.
- Preference given to bilingual Spanish speakers, experience working with American Indian/Alaskan Native communities, experience in the WIC Program, and knowledge of case management or database systems.
- Knowledge of WIC and other federal nutrition programs, as well as American Indian/Alaskan Native tribal governments.
- Familiarity with health and social services programs in the community.
- Knowledge of WIC certification processes and eligibility requirements, or ability to learn.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and willingness to learn other software applications.
