Matrix Providers is hiring a Nurse Practitioner (NP) -Gastroenterology to join our team of talented professionals who provide health care services to our Military Service Members and their families at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Department of Medicine, Gastroenterology Service in Ft. Sam Houston, Texas.

  • Employment Status: Full-time
  • Compensation: This is a salaried position, paid bi-weekly.
  • Schedule: As a general guideline, the hours will be an 8-hour work day, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding federal holidays) with a 1-hour non-paid lunch.

Requirements: The Nurse Practitioner (NP) must have and meet the following:

  • Degree: Master's degree in nursing.
  • Education:
    • Graduate from an academic program within the nursing specialty field of study accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
    • Foreign medical graduate HCP / Nurse Practitioners shall possess a valid certificate from the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates.
  • Board Certification - NP shall hold a master's, post-masters, or doctorate from a nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Nation League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). NP shall be licensed registered nurses certified as acute care or adult care NPs by the American Nursing Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
  • Continuing Medical Education (CME) - The contractor shall be required to meet Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements, participate in research involving planning, performance, and analysis of data and publications, attend education lectures as appropriate, assist with data gathering for QA/PI purposes.
  • Certification:
    • Certified in Gastroenterology as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the recognized national nursing certification organization for the specialty area of practice as appropriate (for example, National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses, American Nurses Association, National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Specialties).
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by way of an American Heart Association-approved training program.
    • Shall register on the Internet-based Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS). PECOS registration is for providers who treat MEDICARE-eligible patients and is needed to order Durable Medical Equipment and have MEDICARE pay for it. DME includes canes, walkers, CPAP, home oxygen, TENS, etc.
    • Must have or obtain and maintain a current, valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number prior to performing the contract services.
  • Experience:
    • Have been continuously employed in the practice of Gastroenterology or in training for one (1) year prior to the commencement of services under this contract.
    • NP shall be able to perform all duties with minimal clinical supervisor guidance. The contract NP shall consult with the designated appointed GI Clinic oversight official with questions that pertain to clinical issues and with the Contracting Officer Representative for administrative issues.
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse. Meet all licensing/certification requirements to perform as a Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner including possessing and maintaining a current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number. Shall have and maintain a valid unrestricted license to practice medicine from one of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or US Virgin Islands and shall be able to obtain clinical privileges to practice medicine with the applicable Medical Treatment Facility credentials committee. All certifications shall be maintained in a current status at all times while performing services under this contract.

Job Summary:

  • Provides direct patient care to patients to include the following: evaluation, examination,
    diagnosis, and treatment of medical disorders. The incumbent is assigned the full range of cases including the most difficult and is responsible for determining when to seek advice and guidance from GI staff providers.
  • Examines patients and performs initial patient work-up and assessment of patients' care and treatment; determines the need for and orders laboratory tests, X-rays, and other diagnostic tests; interprets the total medical evidence, incorporating information into an accurate diagnosis or appraisal; and institutes proper treatment and patient care.
  • Extracts or works with patient's body fluids or tissues; prepares patient specimens for
    examination performs specialized or non-routine tests on body fluids or tissue samples or confirms patients' test results.
  • Diagnoses disease, illness, disorder, or injury; institutes treatment of patients; and seeks the advice of appropriate Gastroenterology physicians for more serious or uncommon conditions.
  • Prescribes for and treats a variety of diseases, disorders, and injuries; treats patients returning for routine or directed follow-up and treatment of chronic illnesses previously documented in patient's medical records; writes routine orders on outpatients; performs medical histories.
  • Provides a full range of emergency services or crises interventions in the absence of the
    physician, including lifesaving emergency procedures in order to stabilize a patient within the scope of practice and approved protocols.
  • Must be able to define unknown conditions and resolve critical problems.
  • Documents on outpatient and inpatient record histories, physical exams, laboratory and x-ray data, assessments, diagnostic and therapeutic plans, patient progress, consultations, procedure reports, etc.
  • The Nurse Practitioner shall have sufficient experience to be able to perform tasks to include, but not limited to, the following: Provide consultation on referrals by Primary Care Managers. Consult with GI designated or other consultants as appropriate.
  • The Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for seeing patients discuss findings, need for
    follow-up care, and timing of the next GI procedure or appointment.
  • Provide medical advice over the telephone and enter a summary of Telephone Consultation conversations into CHCS/AHLTA or other Electronic Health Record systems in order to capture workload data.
  • Obtain appropriate history, physical, assessment, and plan in a timely and appropriate manner on each patient and develop a treatment plan.
  • Responsible for completion of all required documentation and closing encounters within
    AHLTA/CHCS/or any system utilized by BAMC within 72 hours.
  • Utilize, coordinate, and professionally interact with paraprofessional staff as appropriate.
  • Preliminarily interpret radiographs; discriminates between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical problems and GI-related or unrelated issues.
  • Writes prescriptions, orders the administration of medications, dispenses medications, and prescribed controlled substances in accordance with approved treatment protocols.

  • Provides surveillance of adherence to medical practices and procedures to stabilize chronically ill patients; adjusts regimens within established protocols recognizing when to refer the patient to the physician or other primary care members.
  • Provides consultation, teaching, and coordination of all patients and their family members regarding treatment, medical care, and the need to see the GI Physician prior to a sedated examination by the Physician.
  • Coordinates findings and diagnoses, laboratory results, follow-up treatment plans, or the effect of medications prescribed in accordance with approved protocols and as necessary with other clinic providers.
  • Provides primary care and preventive services to healthy individuals, including guidance in common illnesses, accidents, alternative drug usage, etc. Evaluates the total healthcare needs of patients and develop plans to meet patients' needs.
  • Provides group, individual, and family teaching and counseling and/or initiates coordination of health care needs to include Cancer Rectal Colon (CRC) Group Classes. Counsels and teaches patients about modification of risk factors, lifestyle changes, and medication management. Educates and counsels patients and family members regarding procedures to be performed and treatments provided.
  • Reviews and updates patient education materials in accordance with nursing practice standards and current medical treatment practices including websites, teaching materials, and general media to stay current with recent developments.
  • Participates and presents outcomes in professional conferences at the local level as required.
  • Participates in team conference meetings.
  • Reports process improvement and safety issues.
  • Performs data collection, compiles data, creates, accesses, updates, and maintains security of computer databases to facilitate patient outcomes.
  • Performs, assists, and interprets diagnostic studies within the Gastroenterology Clinic including; capsule endoscopy, hydrogen breath testing, smart pill, esophageal manometry, rectal manometry, pH Impedance, BRAVO capsule study, liver Fibroscan, and diagnostic/therapeutic paracentesis.
  • Prepares medical records, reports, forms, and documents and completes quality assessment reviews as required. All records, forms, and documents shall be complete and accurate at least 99% of the time unless otherwise specified.
